A specialization means to concentrate on and becoming an expert in that particular subject or skill. According to Hult International Business School a graduate degree is an invaluable way to boost your skills and improve your acumen but having a specialization degree is much better because it helps you in tailoring your curriculum in a way that shall for sure be beneficial to you in the future.

BENEFITS OF SPECIALISATION

  • Strengthens your skill set

Specializing in a particular subject helps to define your skill set. After completing your education when you are looking for a job it would be a great benefit for landing a job. It also enhances you to gain more expertise in a particular domain as each section has its own set of requirements depending upon the. Major portion of employers look for candidates who possess a specialized skill set.

  • Better job opportunities

Having a specialization in a certain subject gives you the benefit that you are well trained in that particular area and you have proper knowledge of how to complete the work. Companies constantly look for people who are experts so that they don’t have to replace them again and again. Also having specialists to work creates a trust among the clients and customers that their work is in good hands. As you deliver more qualitative work with the help of your knowledge, it simply builds up the trust and makes them more renowned.

  • Enhanced productivity

People who aren’t specialized or have less experience are prone to make more errors than the ones who have a proper specialization. While it is said that we learn from our mistakes, it slows down the productivity and requires more time and resources to rectify those mistakes. So, a person who knows his job well will make fewer errors bringing out more output leading to productivity. Reducing the faults and giving better results will directly increase the revenue of the company which is the ultimate goal of any organization.

  • Solidarity

As they would be working with people who share the same interest and have the same job roles, they would enjoy their company and develop good social relations which is important in everyone’s life. they would unite for the same causes and understand each other’s issues.

These are just a few benefits that are mentioned but there are many more advantages that a person shall gain if they decide to specialize in a particular subject.

For example, if I pursue a masters in Mass Communication degree programme without a specialization, I would not have any value addition. On the other hand, if I am aware that I want to pursue Advertising & Marketing Communication in the future, and specialize in that, then that shall give me an advantage. Then my postgraduate degree programme would better hone me in my mass communication skills and also increase my skills related to that particular domain.

This viewpoint has been voiced by many and Ms.Sonia Petty who is an Associate Brand Manager at Danone also supports this belief and speaks from personal experience that while her core courses laid the foundation of her career, the specialization courses helped her to create a niche for herself. Specialization courses are designed to teach students a particular set of skills that are meant to prepare you for what the future holds for you.
